It is unlikely that you have heard of Miches, the new Golden Coast of the Dominican Republic. This small emerging town located in the province of El Seibo on the northeastern coast, nestled between the slopes of the Eastern Mountain Range and the waters of the Samaná Bay, is considered a hidden gem and has been drawing comparisons to the popular Golden Coast of Australia.
Miches boasts of untouched sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical forests, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and those seeking a secluded getaway. But what has recently propelled Miches into prominence is the reopening of the five-star Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda resort, which had been closed for nearly a year since its launch in January 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virgin town is situated just 90 minutes by car from Punta Cana and its luxurious beach, golf, and seaside resorts.
Miches offers a plethora of opportunities for water sports such as swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, rowing, and boat rides. From December to March, visitors can also witness the magnificent sight of whale watching in the Samaná Bay. Or simply relax and soak up the sun on the wide sandy beaches.
For those looking for an adventure, a trip to Miches’s Salto de la Jalda, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean with a height of 120 meters, is a must-do. Located just 40 minutes by car from Miches, you can hire guides to help you navigate the moderately difficult trails that can take anywhere between three to four hours to hike, ride horseback, or take a helicopter ride and land close to the waterfall.
On your way back to Punta Cana, make sure to stop and admire Montaña Redonda and its breathtaking views. Park your car nearby and take a truck to the top, but beware, the narrow roads are not for the faint-hearted. The reward for your effort is a selection of swings that will make you feel like you’re flying off the edge of the mountain.
